Hiawassee, located in the northeastern part of the state is the county seat of Towns County, GA. Situated on the Hiawassee River, this town was built along the Cherokee Unicoi Trade Route-a Native American trade route from Tennessee to the Eastern U.S. coast as a means to further the fur trade with Europe. Today, Hiawassee is home of the Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds which hosts entertainment from superstar musicians, to beauty pageants, car shows, and carnivals at the 161 acre tract of land along Lake Chatuge.
